For Memorial Day, Essential Pittsburgh is rebroadcasting an episode from March 21 with former Army Ranger Captain and western Pennsylvania native Sean Parnell, author of Outlaw Platoon. The memoir details Parnell’s experiences as commander of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan. At the age of 24, he led an elite infantry platoon, nicknamed “the Outlaws,” into a mountain valley on Afghanistan’s eastern frontier to root out insurgents. The mission turned into an ambush, leading to a 16-month combat ordeal that forged an unforgettable bond within the platoon.
