At the age of 24, he led an elite infantry platoon, nicknamed “the Outlaws,” into a mountain valley on Afghanistan’s eastern frontier to root out insurgents. The mission turned into an ambush, leading to a 16-month combat ordeal that forged an unforgettable bond within the platoon.
