      The Pittsburgh Marathon

      This Sunday, over 20,000 runners will participate in the Pittsburgh Marathon, half marathon and relay. Registration for this year’s marathon filled up in record time. We’ll learn about preparations for this year’s race from Pittsburgh Marathon director Patrice Matamoros. And, it goes without saying the most essential piece of running equipment is a good pair of running shoes. We’ll learn how to find the right running shoes from Bob Shooer an avid runner and owner of the Fleet Feet store in Mt. Lebanon.

      Training for the Big Race

      Essential Public Radio Morning Edition host, Josh Raulerson, has been training for the Pittsburgh Marathon. We joined him for a run through Schenley Park and talked about how he’s been training for the race. Then, over 20,000 runners will be taking part in the Pittsburgh Marathon events. No matter how much caution is exercised in training, injuries are bound to happen. We’ll talk about common running injuries and foot care for runners with Tara Ridge, physical therapist at UPMC’s Center for Sports Medicine and Center for Rehab Services. And we’ll find out from Leslie Bonci director of sports nutrition at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, whether supplements, meal replacements and sports drinksare really needed for a healthy diet.

      A number of elite runners will be in Sunday’s marathon. One runner is Greenville native Jed Christiansen who will be running the half marathon.  Last year, Christiansen won the Steeler’s 5K. He also completed the Olympic Trials in January.
